Earlier this year we met Pooja B in Mumbai doing a panel on representation in music learning a great deal about the specific issues women face in India and United Arab Emirates when it comes to music. From India but based in Dubai, Pooja B doubles as a flight attendant and DJ representing a rather rare intersection which only enriches her storytelling as a dj and voice to be reckoned with proven by this arresting mix for us. She also co-runs her own platform dedicated to representing women-identifying djs/producers named The EQ Way with Nephra DJ.
Tell us about this mix:
Some fun stuff I'm digging atm...music by friends, samples I've wanted to fool around with and a great representation of female producers making brilliant music comprising more than half the tracks :D It starts groovy but I slip into my twisted techno groove pretty quickly...haha!
When did you start DJing?
I first started djing in mid 2009 in Chennai (India) playing hip hop and rnb. Then when I moved to Dubai I took a 2-year hiatus. And when I got back into it, I started playing house and techno.
First gig:
Was in a small dingy underground basement club in Chennai. A lot of friends came to watch me and it was a week after I started Djing so I was veryyy nervous.
Favorite party ever played:
Sisyphos for their May Day party this year.
Fave DJ:
1 is sooo hard to choose...but Jane Fitz played an incredible set at Analog Room in Dubai where I do a residency a few years back. That feeling sticks to this day.
Fave producer:
Rrose right now
Pet peeve when DJing:
people passing drinks over the console...my heart almost comes in my mouth.
What’s the best compliment you’ve ever gotten?
I'm always chuffed when someone says that I inspire them because of how I juggle a flying job in Dubai, a family in India and Djing everywhere.
Place you’d like to play:
Berghain
Something you want everyone to know about you:
I LOVE DOGS :)
