Julianna

We first met Julianna in her home country Colombia, but not in her home city. She grew up in Medellin where she still resides and is part of to collectives, firstly Move where she was able to grow as a DJ and secondly NOTT a feminist collective looking to raise awareness around women DJs in Latin America. She joined us on panel in Bogota last year at Video Club concerning the scene in Colombia, which was such a treat. She recently killed her BOILER ROOM SETvery hard to mention. But I want to make a small apart to the the music that some of my friends are doing right now: Retrograde Youth, Verraco, Biometric Systems, Merino and all his aliases (Zed Kappa and W.I.R.E), my argentinian friends Ngly and Mekas, also love this spanish producer JASS…and the list can go on., and again kills it here for our latest mix. Check out Q+A and mix below!

Tell us about this mix:

Well I was thinking to make something special but what can be more special than being yourself? At the end I decided not to think too much and show you an introduction to my tastes. A little journey into the sounds that Julianna loves the most.

When did you start DJing?

10 years ago, here in Medellín. My family in that moment didn’t like so much the idea that I became DJ. So I started to take lessons with my best friend at the time without my family approval. Now they supports me massively and Rachel (my friend) is a fantastic musician (she didn’t continue with her dj career). I remember that I bought my headphones with a raffle I did, lol, actually that struggle time took me where I am now and make me believe in that romantic idea that you can follow your passion.

First gig:

My first serious gig was in a small bar called Horeb here in Medellín. That was the first place that opened the doors to my music and actually I became the first woman that played there at that time.

Favorite party ever played:

Since 4 years ago I’ve been working with ‘Move’ a small but really powerful collective. We have been bringing to our city an experience with music and art. This year we made a party with some local talent and I was closing the night…i don’t know, but i love Move’s crowd, they are so energetic and passionate with music, that night became a really important night for me. I truly believe to myself that I can make good things for people with music.

Fave DJ:

Merino is my local hero, Dj Stingray and Steffi are one of them, mostly when I started to djing. Also my good friend Alienata its awesome, my friends at Nótt Marea and Andrea and Magdalena are great selectors! Objekt jesus! and I-F always listen to them.

Fave producer:

very hard to mention. But I want to make a small apart to the the music that some of my friends are doing right now: Retrograde Youth, Verraco, Biometric Systems, Merino and all his aliases (Zed Kappa and W.I.R.E), my argentinian friends Ngly and Mekas, also love this spanish producer JASS…and the list can go on.

Pet peeve when DJing:

Don’t ask me for a song. Also I hate pictures, the flash thing is so annoying

What’s the best compliment you’ve ever gotten?

you touch my soul

Place you’d like to play:

difficult question….when you are from this part of the world basically you want to play everywhere! lol

Something you want everyone to know about you:

I used to have a small record shop here in my city. Also I’m a truly believer in artistic freedom and that’s why I prefer to have a normal job in order to not have to play regular standard music every weekend, I work as an illustrator in a children books publishing. Also I co-run Nótt, a small collective of directed by Marea, Andrea Arias and myself. We are currently doing an x-ray in Latin American female scene. Looking out for talents in our continent.
